Complicated rooflines are the Georgetown story

Older Georgetown, and Glen Williams
The older core around Main Street and Mill Street, and the hamlet of Glen Williams just north, are a different job entirely — nineteenth-century stone and brick, steep pitches, stone chimneys, and properties that in some cases are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Halton Hills maintains a heritage register covering Georgetown, Acton and Glen Williams, and exterior alterations to a designated property can require a heritage permit from the Town.
On those buildings, as in Fergus and Elora, the flashing is the job. Formed metal counterflashing let into the masonry joint, not sealant packed around it.
Permits and who to call
Georgetown is in the Town of Halton Hills, Halton Region. Building permits go through Halton Hills Building Services. The ordinary Ontario rule applies: a like-for-like re-shingle with no structural change is treated as maintenance and repair and does not normally need a permit, but structural change, sheathing replacement beyond a repair, a new skylight opening that needs framing, a flat roof assembly change or a switch of material type does.
That last point comes up here more than most places, because Georgetown has a lot of houses where a homeowner wants standing seam on a front elevation and asphalt on the back. It is doable. It is also a different permit conversation, and it should happen before anything is ordered.
