Kitchener's biggest single block of housing is post-war through 1970s — Forest Heights, Stanley Park, Alpine, Country Hills — and it produces one problem over and over: attic ventilation. Blown insulation upgraded at some point in the eighties or nineties, pushed hard into the eaves, blocking the soffit intake completely. Then roof vents or a ridge vent added later. An exhaust vent with no intake does not ventilate the attic; it pulls conditioned air up out of the house through every ceiling gap, and it moves moisture in exactly the wrong direction.
The symptom is frost on the underside of the sheathing in February, curling shingles years earlier than they should, and sometimes mould that has nothing to do with a leak. We check intake as well as exhaust, which means looking in the attic rather than only at the roof.
